On account of its long tradition and experience, ANDRITZ Maerz can claim to be one of the leading suppliers of engineering, know-how and process technology to the steel and copper industry in the melting and heat treatment sectors. The activities of ANDRITZ Maerz include the planning, engineering, supply, installation, and start-up of furnace systems for thermal processes and accessory installations for the steel and copper industry. By acquiring Maerz, the ANDRITZ GROUP has extended its product portfolio in the furnace construction product segment in the Group’s METALS business area. The business area offers future-oriented technologies in the cold-strip market segment worldwide. All required processes can be engineered, delivered, and started up by one supplier – packages that cover complete lines for carbon and stainless steel, as well as non-ferrous cold-strip processing lines. The ANDRITZ GROUP is a global market leader in the supply of customized plants, systems, and services for the hydropower industry, the pulp and paper industry, the steel industry, and other specialized industries (solid/liquid separation, feed, and biofuel).

1911 - 1940:
Founding of an engineering office for open-hearth furnaces in Kattowitz/Silesia by Johannes Maerz. Development of the MAERZ® furnace, a steel melting furnace featuring top performance and unsurpassed flame building/control. More than 200 open-hearth furnaces were newly built or retrofitted.
1941 - 1960:
Founding of MAERZ Ofenbau GmbH by Österreichische Magnesit-AG, Munich (1941) (later Veitsch-Radex AG/RHI AG, Austria). Expansion of product range to include glass and copper melting furnaces. Founding of Maerz Ofenbau AG in Zurich (lime shaft furnaces) (1950).
1961 - 1970:
1962: Move to the present premises in Düsseldorf and acquisition of Walter Brinkmann GmbH & Co. KG, Werdohl (steel mill outfitters). Expansion of business to include heating and heat treatment furnaces for steel. Development of the MAERZ® double walking beam furnace for heat-treating of raw plates.
1971 - 2006:
Acquisition of Gautschi Electro-Fours, S. A., Tägerwilen, Switzerland. Company renamed MAERZ-Gautschi Industrieofenanlagen GmbH, Düsseldorf and Tägerwilen (1998). Hochtemperatur Engineering GmbH (HTE), an affiliate of Deutsche Beteiligungs AG, acquires Maerz-Gautschi from RHI, Austria (2000). First energy-optimized MAERZ® reheating furnace for copper slabs (2000). Development of the car bottom forging furnace (2003).
2007 - today:
Realization of more than 280 heat treatment furnaces and 95 heating furnaces in the past 15 years. Separation of the business premises Gautschi, Tägerwilen and the subsidiary Walter Brinkmann GmbH & Co. KG (2007). Since March 2008, the company has been part of the ANDRITZ GROUP’s METALS business area, furnace construction product segment. The company name is changed to ANDRITZ Maerz GmbH (2008).
The first MAERZ® open-hearth furnace that Johannes Maerz developed in 1912 marked the beginning of a sequence of successes. Since then, mature concepts and ingenious innovations, combined with consistent customer focus, have created a broad basis of trust in ‘performance made by MAERZ®'.
